Winter has arrived, and this year’s cold air masses have been quite noticeable.
Thinking back to the freezing start of the year, for the health and safety of the elderly at home,
installing a heater in the room wasn’t enough.
(Our old home in Kaohsiung is equipped with a DAIKIN Inverter Split-Type Air Conditioner/Heater, Grand Series, 12-Ping RXV71SVLT / FTXV71SVLT.)
The scariest part during cold snaps is actually when you’re about to shower, just after taking off your clothes—that bone-chilling shiver!
So, this year, I arranged for an electrician to install a bathroom ventilation heater to make showering comfortable even during cold snaps.
After various arrangements and comparisons, I followed the electrician’s recommendation
and chose the
Panasonic FV-30BU3R Ceramic Heating Bathroom Ventilation Fan
Please note that this model, its size, and airflow output come in two variants,
with the main difference being the applicable voltage.
110V FV-30BU3R and 220V FV-30BU3W
Heating method: Ceramic heating
Installation dimensions: 300 x 300 x 180 mm
Assuming smooth installation, the choice depends on the voltage available at the installation site.
The installation process generally follows the steps below.
First, the work crew reinforces and enlarges the opening in the bathroom ceiling.
The original small exhaust fan is removed to prepare for the installation of the ventilation heater.
Most bathrooms with ceilings typically have an exhaust vent.
However, in many homes, the exhaust fan installed during construction doesn’t properly connect to a duct leading to the vent.
Over time, you might think the exhaust fan is removing bathroom moisture, but it’s actually just pushing it into the space above the ceiling,
turning the ceiling into a mold paradise, making it impossible to fully eliminate bathroom mold.
The ventilation heater unit itself
has three adjustable air guide vanes at the air outlet, allowing you to change the direction of airflow based on your preferences.
One side of the unit includes electrical wiring specifications and labels.
This is for consumers installing it themselves, but since I hired a professional crew,
I left these details to the electrician.
This is the exhaust port of the unit, which will be fitted with a duct adapter.
It will connect to the bathroom ceiling’s exhaust vent.
The electrician is attaching the duct to the exhaust cover of the ventilation heater.
The other end of the duct will connect directly to the ceiling exhaust vent we saw earlier.
This step ensures that bathroom moisture is effectively expelled through the ventilation fan’s exhaust function.
Otherwise, installing the heater would just push moisture into the ceiling space, failing to properly dehumidify.
After installation, a test run confirms that the unit is securely fixed.
Vibrations during operation could cause a poorly secured unit to loosen or fall.
(If that happens, it’s safe to say the electrician was extremely careless.)
The version I purchased comes with a remote control, which can be hung in the bathroom for regular use.
It has plenty of features beyond basic heating, including enhanced dehumidification and bathroom drying.
It also has a timer function, so you can, for example, dry the bathroom for a set period after showering before it turns off.
From now on, no matter how cold the winter gets, there’s nothing to fear.
In the past, news reports often mentioned elderly people suffering from heart strain due to extreme temperature changes after showering.
With this ventilation heater installed, that concern is eliminated.
It also avoids the risk of electric shock from bringing heating devices into the bathroom.
If your bathroom doesn’t have a separate power source available,
an emergency solution is to place a kerosene heater at the door to blow warm air inside (while running hot water) to preheat the bathroom, then turn off the heater, close the door, and start showering.
My home originally used the DAINICHI FW-57LET Japan-Made Kerosene Heater.
That’s the quick report. Stay warm and healthy, everyone!
