Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz online from media and tech enthusiasts about lesser-known Chinese PC brands selling refurbished mini PCs.
I got super curious about these tiny machines myself.
I mean, last year I picked up an Acer Revo Box RB102 quad-core mini PC with an N100 processor, and it set me back almost six grand without any discounts.
But the word is these mini PCs with a solid i5-12450H CPU are going for around five thousand NT dollars (barebones)—that’s crazy!
So, I did some digging and learned these PCs are showing up because Intel’s clearing out their Intel 7 process CPUs,
which are basically their older 10nm laptop chips from a while ago.
From what’s out there online, the CPUs with decent stock are:
● Intel 12th Gen Core i5-12450H: 8 cores, 12 threads
● Intel 12th Gen Core i7-12700H: 14 cores, 20 threads
● Intel 12th Gen Core i9-12900HK: 14 cores, 20 threads, overclockable
● Intel 13th Gen Core i7-13620H: 10 cores, 16 threads
Since I’m just grabbing one to tinker with, I went for the cheapest option.
MOREFINE M9 PRO Mini PC (i5-12400H)
When we heard about this, some Taiwanese shops were likely already snagging these from China,
so prices on Taobao are quietly going up.
These get a new label and brand, and boom—they’re resold for a couple thousand more. Pretty sweet deal!
Look at mini PCs from big brands these days—they’re not cheap.
Like the MSI Cubi 5 12M mini PC we unboxed last year with an i3-1215U—it cost 8990 NT just for the base unit.
When I ordered, the barebones (no RAM/SSD) was 1417 RMB, no deals.
Back in Taiwan, with shipping and my bad luck getting hit with customs fees, it totaled about 6000 NT.
Now, without discounts, it’s around 1549 RMB—a slight price bump.
Big brands have done this laptop-CPU-in-a-desktop thing too.
Like the ASUS ExpertCenter P500 Mini Tower we unboxed recently—it’s got a 13th Gen Intel laptop CPU and performs great.
After shipping to Taiwan, we realized we got the mainland China version, not the international one... the packaging’s way plainer than what’s shown online.
The brand’s called WalkFish (like, what, a walking fish??)
Open it up, and it’s super simple packaging—no fancy extras here.
It’s the domestic China version, so no MOREFINE logo on the case.
It comes with a bracket to mount it on the back of a monitor.
The power adapter, after checking with the seller, is an international version with 120W output.
Plus, there’s an HDMI cable thrown in.
The best thing about this machine is the I/O—it’s got tons of ports.
Up front, you get two standard USB 3.2 Type-A ports.
Alright, let’s hype up this mini PC’s backend! Check out the rear of this bad boy—you’ve got a slick CPU cooling fin exhaust keeping things chill.
The I/O setup? Absolutely stacked:
- 2x HDMI for crisp multi-monitor action.
- 2x USB 3.2 Type-A for all your gear.
- 1x USB 3.2 Type-C (with DP1.4 and 4K output support—hello, stunning visuals!).
- Plus, a 2.5G Intel i226 RJ-45 Ethernet port for lightning-fast networking.
It’s got everything you need and then some, including full triple-monitor output capability. This mini PC is ready to steal the show!
Time to get hands-on, tech lovers! FoxBoy’s ready to pop the hood on this mini PC, and let me tell you, it’s a compact beast! True to its small size, even the screws are these tiny, fine-threaded gems—perfect for a mini marvel like this.
let’s take a peek inside this mini PC powerhouse! The layout is clean and compact, designed for maximum performance in a tiny package. The RAM? It’s rocking SO-DIMM slots, supporting up to a whopping 64GB of DDR4-3200. Talk about packing a punch for all your multitasking needs!
his mini PC doesn’t skimp on storage options! It comes equipped with a standard M.2 2280 slot for your SSD, giving you plenty of room to plug in a high-speed drive and keep your files flying
This mini PC also comes with an uncommon M.2 2242 slot—a spec typically found in laptops. It’s the only thing FoxBoy isn’t thrilled about, but hey, it’s still a cool bonus for storage options!
The seller bragged about tossing in a WiFi 6 network card—and they weren’t kidding! But hold up… this thing looks different from the usual suspects. A closer peek reveals it’s an Intel AX201, an embedded laptop chip, jury-rigged onto a standard M.2 card adapter! Yep, these so-called “recycled gems” from the clearance bin are full of wild surprises—love the creativity!
Let’s dive deeper into the teardown! The CPU’s rocking a pure copper heatsink paired with a laptop-style exhaust fan—super clever design for such a tiny rig. Sure, it’s not fancy, but at this price? No complaints here, folks—it’s a steal!
Time to power up, tech fans! I grabbed all my spare parts lying around and stacked them in—let’s get this baby running! That includes a pair of DDR4-2400 8GB RAM (left over from a laptop upgrade) and a snazzy 256GB Anaconda SSD. Ready to roll!
The BIOS is rocking a sleek UEFI setup—nice touch! But this might just be a generic off-the-shelf version. Still, it gets the job done!
Awesome! In the BIOS, it’s picking up the SSD info like a champ—smooth sailing so far! Next up, let’s dive into installing the operating system and get this rig rolling!
Even the UEFI boot logo is super clean and minimal—talk about no frills! No fancy merchant logo here, just a straight-up Intel one stealing the spotlight.
When it comes to performance, power efficiency, and temps, this mini PC holds its own like a champ! The i5-12450H CPU packs a punch with 4 P-cores (8 threads) and 4 E-cores (4 threads)—perfectly overkill for everyday office tasks. Plus, the integrated Intel UHD Graphics Xe G4 48EUs makes streaming 4K content a breeze—smooth and stunning!
The only catch? Finding drivers is a bit of a treasure hunt. If you grab the barebones version, you’ll need to head over to MOREFINE’s global website to track them down. And get this—the installation’s not a simple setup file; you’ll have to manually import them via Device Manager. Since it’s a unique spec, Windows 11 won’t auto-install anything—not even the wired or wireless network drivers. Yep, a small hurdle, but worth it!
In short, this little mini PC proves one thing: low cost really does solve a lot of problems.
For readers who aren’t very tech-savvy, I wouldn’t recommend going for the absolute barebone kit. Instead, it’s smarter to choose a bundle with RAM and SSD included. Yes, it’s a bit more expensive, but you’ll get a pre-installed OS and all the necessary drivers right out of the box—saving you a ton of hassle.
Whether you want Windows 10 or 11, and whichever language you need, the Taobao sellers are surprisingly “experienced” at setting that up for you. Even if you decide to reinstall later, at least the SSD will already have the driver files ready to go.
So there you have it—a quick reference for anyone curious about picking up one of these budget-friendly mini PCs.
